Sara Schuster ’15
My name is Sara Schuster. I graduated from Mines in 2015 with a BS in Chemical and Biochemical Engineering. I also was a part of the McBride Honors Program and minored in Bioengineering and Life Sciences. After Mines I went straight on to the University of Colorado Medical School and graduated with my MD in 2019. Since then I have been completing my residency in Family Medicine at St Anthony North Hospital.
I decided to go into medicine after Mines because I loved the STEM sciences and wanted to continue using those skills to help others. The outstanding education in problem solving and self-directed learning was a huge asset in making this transition.
I have spent the last year treating COVID-19 in the clinic, emergency room, hospital floors, and the ICU. Unfortunately, we do not have great treatments for COVID-19. Our work has been a lot of co-morbidity and overlying condition management, and oxygen optimization while we learn new things about this disease every day.
It has been incredible to see all fields of STEM come together to give us these innovative and effective vaccines. This technology is truly changing the way we approach COVID-19 and saving millions of lives every day. I am proud to be part of the scientific community doing work all over the world to tackle this pandemic.
